The Charge Nurse is an experienced Registered Nurse who works under the direction of the Program Manager to coordinate the delivery of high quality inter-professional patient/client centered care on an assigned unit. The Charge Nurse supports the efficient operation of the unit and facilitates change through continuous quality improvement to meet the care needs of our patients/clients.
Skills and Qualifications Required:
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred and current, unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- 2 - 5 years recent and related clinical experience
- Previous experience in leadership roles
- Previous participation on inter-professional committees or at least 3 months of charge nurse experience in the stream of care
Position Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Program Manager, coordinates inter-professional care plan development for each patient/client.
- Under the direction of the Program Manager, coordinates episodes of care and supports discharge-planning processes.
- Supports and empowers staff as a role model, to contribute to the delivery of high quality care.
- Provides clinical front-line expertise in all aspects of care delivery within the unit.
- Assists the Program Manager in providing leadership within the practice setting by ensuring compliance of self and others with professional standards, legislation and the Mission, Vision and Values of Providence Care.
- Works collaboratively with the Program Manager to ensure effective utilization of unit based resources (staff and supplies)
- Assigns staff-patient/client assignments, using the College of Nurses Scope of Practice.
- Assesses staffing needs of the unit and makes recommendations/requests.
- Provides leadership in unusual or emergency situations, ensures emergency equipment/supplies are replaced within one hour of an incident.
- Works with discharge planners and other team members to prepare patients/clients for discharge.
- Coordinates unit activities with other hospital departments and inter-professional team members.
