Job description:

The HIV Nurse Specialist for the Northern Population Health Unit (NPHU) is responsible to coordinate implementation, monitoring and ongoing evaluation of HIV initiatives across the northern health authorities. The Saskatchewan HIV Strategy aims to reduce the rate of new infections, facilitate access to therapy and treatment, increase quality of life, and decrease discrimination. The HIV Nurse Specialist works closely with staff of the Northern Population Health Unit and three health authorities; primary care providers; community partners; the Ministry of Health and other sectors; southern health regions; and First Nations agencies. The HIV Specialist reports jointly to the NPHU Deputy Medical Health Officer for various clinical aspects of practice and to the Manager of the NPHU for administrative and some programming related aspects. Human Resources Exemption: No
 

Licenses

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license

Education

  • Course credits in community health and public health nursing are required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Experience

  • Experience working with people living with HIV
  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience in primary care, public/community health
  • Nursing experience in STI or blood borne pathogens in clinical/community setting
  • Experience with marginalized populations in a health-related field
  • or related experience in leadership, ability and competence in practice
     

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge in community health nursing theory and principles
  • Advance computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Access).
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be self directed and work relatively independently
  • Knowledge of current trends/issues/best practice strategies
  • Ability to carry out duties in a manner that meets clients’ safety needs
  • Ability to work independently
     

Other Education & Training

  • Master's degree in nursing, community health and epidemiology, or public health or a suitable combination of education and experience is preferred
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)
